Have It Your Way, 9-inches Works
People magazine provides a colorful 2-page spread and article in their Jan. 12 issue that plugs author Alex Bogusky’s “9-Inch Diet” book which became available at most book stores this week. This weight-loss and diet themed issue of People is fatter than normal as it’s double-thick. People fails to mention in their article that Bogusky’s day-job is partially funded by major clients like Burger King and Domino’s Pizza.
What’s even funnier, according to Advertising Age, “In referencing the obnoxiously large portions that are responsible for growing butts in the U.S., the article depicts McDonald’s fries and drinks as examples.” They further state, “…the adman blames gigantic portions for the country’s obesity epidemic, offering as the cure smaller plates. ”
Obviously Bogusky is a subject matter expert worthy of such a book from Powerhouse Books as he “whittled 3 inches from his waist since switching to 9-inch plates five years ago,” People writes. But with Big Mac’s being slammed isn’t like the pot calling the kettle black or simply Bogusky slamming one of Burger King and Domino’s major competitor’s McDonalds on purpose? I’m just curious if the ad and marketing executives at Burger King and Domino’s received free, autographed copies from Mr. Bogusky.
I’m sure Bogusky has a nice sized office space at MDC Partners’ Crispin Porter & Bogusky as according to Businessweek, “Maxxcom, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of MDC Partners, Inc. (NasdaqNM: MDCA) acquired additional 28% equity interest in Crispin Porter & Bogusky, Inc. from Charles Porter, Alex Bogusky, Jeff Hicks, Jeff Steinhour for $28.16 million.” For the record, Bogusky’s share was approximately $0.22 million, you do the math.
Bogusky’s agency obviously isn’t having any Mac attacks lately as in this past August they won a creative contract from Hulu.com handling their creative and media account with an estimated expenditure of a whopping $50 million. And of course if anyone at the agency gets thirsty, they can always drink Sprite, but if they are on a diet, then Coke Zero would be the way to go as they are also clients of Crispin Porter & Bogusky group.
The irony of the whole People issue and Bogusky’s diet book is that Sonic and Subway purchased print-space advertising in that issue and recently Dominos has been plugging away with television commercials touting their own subway sandwiches “beating out Subway in national taste tests.” The paradox of it all is that Burger King and Sonic both serve Coca-Cola products. Zero calories, how can you go wrong, right? Well if you order a Coke Zero plus a Burger King Whopper with mayonnaise it’s only 680 calories and if you hold the Coke Zero, it’s still 680 calories. I think I’ll ask them to hold the mayo next time as I’m not a fan of a Big Mac, besides, a Big Mac is 600 calories with Coke Zero and it comes with a secret sauce, not mayo.
Ok, now comes the dare, I dare you, I dare you to have a Mac attack or you can just have it your way, say something, c’mon, we’re waiting, I dare you…rg sends!
